How Pesticide Works?
Pest Control with Pesticides.
Pest control operators oftentimes have to resort to using chemical pesticides in order to control common household pests such as cockroaches, bedbugs, or ants. Infestations of these pests will frequently only respond to chemical treatments since other types of control frequently will not work. There are many different classes and types of pesticides that can be used against common household pests. Some of these pesticides are designed specifically for certain types of household pests. However, most pesticide treatments are known as broad spectrum treatments which means they can be used against many types of common infestations. Which one will work in a given situation must be determined by pest control services that are knowledgeable in the chemical formulations involved with pesticides and what pesticide can be most effective for a given scenario.
How do Pesticides Work?
Pesticides as chemicals work in a variety of different ways and some are more effective than others. However, the most common class of pesticide, the organophosphates, have a general means of controlling insect infestations when they are implemented. Organophosphates work typically by acting as a destroyer of the enzyme known as acetylcholinesterase (sometimes called AChE) that is an essential enzyme involved in muscle control in all animals. This enzyme functions to break down a chemical nerve messenger responsible for muscle contraction known as acetylcholine (sometimes called ACh). Muscles in animals contract due to the acetylcholine signal released by nerves and the job of acetylcholinesterase is to break down acetylcholine and allow the muscle to relax. So how most pesticides work, is that they destroy acetylcholinesterase and prevent muscle relaxation. What this means for the affected insects is that the muscles controlling breathing no longer function and the insects quickly asphyxiate and die due to paralysis and lack of oxygen. Such means of control is very effective and can be delivered by surface sprays, aerosols, or gel baits.
Another common means of control is the use of chemical pesticides that affect the molting stages of insect pests. As insects mature from the nymph stage to adult stage they undergo a shedding of their outer shell, known as the exoskeleton. Some pesticides actually prevent this shedding of the exoskeleton and cause the insect to die in the process. These types of pesticides can be delivered in the same ways as with the organophosphates by using surface sprays, aerosols, or gel baits.
